CHM2104   Inorganic Chemistry   (30 credits)

Year Running: 2017/2018
Credit level: F5

Description

This module builds upon fundamental concepts introduced at level 1 to cover aspects of structure, bonding and reactivity of main group and transition metal compounds. Group theory is used to predict vibrational spectra and to construct molecular orbital energy level diagrams. The MO description is used to explain the bonding and stability of a range of compounds, including main-group organometallics, hypervalent compounds and complexes with metal-ligand ¿-interactions. Transition metal reaction mechanisms and the structures and properties of elements and compounds in the solid state are discussed, together with environmental inorganic chemistry and methods of spectroscopic characterisation.
